Since its formation in the 1990s, the Southern California HIV Advocacy Coalition (SCHAC) has played a vital role in the development of major public health policies relating to HIV/AIDS in California. SCHAC remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting and cultivating civic participation in the legislative process, whether at local district offices, in Sacramento, or in Washington DC. The coalition also coordinates lobby days and other forms of direct advocacy.
The mission of SCHAC is to advocate for appropriate funding for HIV/AIDS programs within the state of California; to expand access to quality health care and treatment for all people living with HIV/AIDS; and to lobby for legislation and public policies that promote the health, welfare and civil rights of all Californians affected by HIV/AIDS.
One of the main purposes of SCHAC is to coordinate and organize lobby days and to conduct other forms of direct advocacy on behalf of Californians who are affected by HIV. In addition, SCHAC will promote the participation in these activities by individuals affected by HIV to the greatest extent possible.
It is also a purpose of SCHAC to respond and react in a timely manner to federal and local policy issues of significant importance to the Southern California HIV/AIDS community.
